Spencer Tucker Award for Outstanding Achievement in Military History
By admin | January 18, 2009
ABC-CLIO is seeking nominations for the third annual Spencer Tucker Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Military History. The award recognizes scholars for outstanding leadership in advancing the discipline of military history at all levels of instruction. The award is named for Spencer Tucker, a retired professor and author or editor of more than 30 books. Dr. Tucker held the John Biggs Chair of Military History at the Virginia Military Institute, and is now Senior Fellow of Military History at ABC-CLIO. In 2006, ABC-CLIO recognized Dr. Tucker for his significant work in military history scholarship and for making that scholarship accessible and relevant to today’s students in a series of award-winning publications on war and conflict, including ABC-CLIO’s encyclopedias on the Korean War, the Vietnam War, World War I, and World War II. ABC-CLIO is proud to be associated with Dr. Tucker and welcomes the opportunity to recognize other scholars who are also passionate about taking the study of military history into mainstream curriculum.
The award is intended for inspiring scholars who engage in activities that enhance the intellectual development of history teachers and/or students and for pathbreaking efforts to build bridges between university and secondary school history teachers. The award includes $500 and an engraved commemorative desk clock. The winner of the award will be announced at the 2009 Society of Military History Conference. The 2007 winner was Dr. Dennis Showalter and the 2008 winner was Dr. Linda Karen Miller. To nominate someone for the award, please submit a one page letter describing how the nominee has advanced the discipline of military history. The letter should provide specifics on some of the nominee’s major accomplishments and activities in military history that have propelled the intellectual development of educators at all levels. In addition, please include the nominee’s CV if possible. Nominations should be submitted to Pat Carlin, Manager of Editorial Development for Military History, at [email protected]. All nominations must be submitted by February 15, 2009.
